Inside Mounting - Outside Mounting - Measuring Vertical Blinds

Inside Mounting: Measuring Horizontal & Roller BlindsInside Mounting for horizontal and roller blinds

Inside Mounting (IM) is the most common mounting option with horizontal blinds.  It allows you to display decorative millwork and trim that has been placed around your window.  Not all windows are suitable for IM but if they are this will give the best finished appearance.

How to Measure

  1. Measure the EXACT size of the window on the inside sill.  Do not deduct any allowances.  This is done in our facility for you.  All measurements should be precise down to the nearest eighth of an inch. (For example: 68 1/8", 1/4", 3/8", 1/2", 5/8", 3/4", 7/8")

    • Round down ↓ to the nearest 1/8" for width
    • Round up ↑ to the nearest 1/8 for height

  2. Measure the each direction in three different places. Take measurements from the top of window, the middle of window, the bottom of window.  Record the smallest of the numbers.

  3. Record your numbers as W x H, where Width (W): Left to Right when looking at your window and Height (H): Top to Bottom when looking at the window.

Outside Mounting: Measuring Horizontal & Roller Blinds

Outside Mounting (OM) involves the blind being mounted either on the window molding or directly on to the wall.  The benefit of the outside mount is it allows you to create your space with no visible moldings. With OM, the size you measure will be the size created; NO deductions will be taken for manufacturing.

How to Measure

  1. Measure the Width of the window including any molding or millwork that has been placed around the window.  To facilitate a cleaner look add 1” to your measured width. All measurements should be precise down to the nearest eighth of an inch. (For example: 68 1/8", 1/4", 3/8", 1/2", 5/8", 3/4", and 7/8")

  2. If you ARE mounting the blind ABOVE the moldings, measure the Height of the window including any molding or millwork that has been placed around the window.  To facilitate a cleaner look add 2.5” to your measured height.   This is to allow for the head rail to be mounted to the wall above your trim.  All measurements should be precise down to the nearest eighth of an inch. (For example: 68 1/8", 1/4", 3/8", 1/2", 5/8", 3/4", 7/8")

If you ARE mounting the blind ON your molding, then add only 0.5” to your measured height.

  3. Measure the each direction in three different places. Take measurements from the top of window, the middle of window, the bottom of window.  Record the largest of the numbers.

  4. Record your numbers as W + (0.5”)   x  H (2.5” or 0.5”), where Width (W): Left to Right when looking at your window and Height (H): Top to Bottom when looking at the window.

Left Stack Blind MountingMeasuring Vertical Blinds

Left Stack (LS)

One Way Draw, with the stack folded to left.  It is recommended to be drawn to the side opposite of the door opening.  With sliding doors, it is recommended to draw the stack to the opposite side of the sliding door.

Split Stack Blind MountingSplit Stack (SS)
Verticals are split into two and draw to both sides of the door frames.  SS allows for a uniform and symmetrical look when the verticals are drawn open.  When measuring for the SS, extra side allowance is necessary to allow for full access to your openings.

Right Stack Blind MountingRight Stack (RS)
One Way Draw, with the stack folded to the left.  It is recommended to be drawn to the side opposite of the door opening.  With sliding doors, it is recommended to draw the stack to the opposite side of the sliding door.

How to Measure – OUTSIDE Wall MountHow to measure vertical blinds outside wall mount

  1. Measure the EXACT size of the door/window from outside of the molding on each side.  This will be your width number.  To ensure complete light coverage, add 4”.  If you want the stack to sit at the side of the width allow 12” more.

  2. Measure the height from the top of molding to the floor.  This will be your height number.  To fasten verticals with a wall mount OVER top the molding, add 3”.  To mount directly ON the molding, deduct only 0.5”.  All these measurements will ensure you have a ¼” - ½” above your floor.

  3. Record your numbers as W x H, where Width (W): Left to Right when looking at your window and Height (H): Top to Bottom when looking at the window.
